What you need to do
Either: supply the examiner with a list of at least twelve books which you have read in the previous twelve months. Explain why you read them and what you thought of them, and answer questions about their contents, in English or Dhivehi, but the majority should be in English. The Scout taking the test should be able to produce these books to the examiner at the time of taking the test.
The list should include both fiction and non-fiction, with not more than three books by any one author, and should exclude school text books.
- Or: supply the examiner with a short bibliography dealing with a subject in which you are especially interested. Explain your choice of books to the examiner and answer questions about their contents.
- Describe, in simple terms, how a book is produced.
- Show that you know how to use a library catalogue. Explain how fiction and non-fiction books are arranged on the shelves and why they are treated differently.
Know what is meant by a reference book. What sort of information could you obtain from the following books and how are they arranged?
- The Guinness Book of Records
- Whitaker's Almanack
- History of Maldives by Pirad
- Chambers Encyclopedia
- Timetable
- Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles
- Who's Who
- Divehiraaje Haguramaige Villagadehge Dhashugai
The examiner may substitute a suitable alternative for any title not readily available.
