14th Malé Rover Crew Participates in World Cleanup Day 2026 Initiative "#SaafuMaadhamaeh"

Members of the 14th Malé Rover Crew of Thaajuddeen School Scout Group participated in the #SaafuMaadhamaeh Cleanup, held at Hulhumalé Phase 2 on 19 September 2026, in commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026.

The initiative brought together more than 120 volunteers from various youth organisations, environmental NGOs, and community groups, working collectively towards a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM along the Hulhumalé Phase 2 waterfront, the cleanup focused on removing accumulated waste from coastal pathways, grassy areas, and surrounding public spaces.

Rovers in Action

Throughout the afternoon, members of the 14th Malé Rover Crew worked alongside fellow volunteers to collect discarded plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and other litter from the surrounding environment.

Equipped with gloves and collection sacks, the Rovers covered different sections of the waterfront, gathering waste from vegetation, walkways, and coastal areas.

Following the collection, members also assisted with sorting and auditing the recovered materials, separating recyclable plastics and other waste to support proper disposal and recycling efforts.

Their participation demonstrated the values of Scouting through practical community service, teamwork, and environmental responsibility.

Over 282 Kilograms of Waste Collected

The combined efforts of all participating volunteers resulted in the collection of 282.67 kilograms of waste during the two-hour initiative.

The collected waste consisted of:

- General Waste: 158.72 kg
- Recyclable Plastic: 92.17 kg
- Aluminium: 31.78 kg

An additional waste audit recorded 3,522 plastic items, helping provide insight into the types of plastic pollution affecting the coastal environment.

The findings highlighted the importance of responsible waste management, recycling, and continued community action in protecting the natural environment of the Maldives.

A Collective Effort for a Cleaner Environment

The #SaafuMaadhamaeh Cleanup was organised by the Villa College Students' Association (VCSA), ABYSS of the Maldives National University Student Union, Barnacles, GreenRaajje, and Ripple.

The initiative was supported through collaboration with Banyan Tree, Dhawa Ihuru, Parley Maldives, The Scout Association of Maldives, and Let's Do It Maldives.

The participation of various organisations and volunteers reflected a shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges through collective action.

Upholding the Spirit of Scouting

For the 14th Malé Rover Crew, the initiative served as another opportunity to put the principles of Scouting into action through meaningful service to the community.

Beyond the collection of waste, the activity encouraged greater awareness of the responsibility individuals and communities share in protecting public spaces and marine ecosystems.

Through continued involvement in environmental and community service initiatives, the Crew aims to uphold the Scout principle of leaving the world a better place than it was found.
